WHY ENVOY
You know the feeling.
A couple of bars in, that drum loop already sounds stale. And like everyone else's. Because it is. Same packs, same loops, variation baked in before you ever touched it. Programming it yourself is no better: hours of round robins and velocity lanes to imitate what a performance does on its own.
That's creativity in reverse.
Envoy works forward.
The Cadence Engine recombines sources and reshapes sequences as they play, so the groove keeps moving without landing the same way twice. Spontaneous, alive, and you control how much or how little every step moves.

Meter locks both layers to a shared pulse. Poly lets them drift. Naked patterns, no processing beyond the instrument.
FLUX RANDOMIZER™
Turn it on and the sequence evolves continuously, on a percentage you set, per mode, per block and per parameter. Turn it off and your original pattern returns untouched.
Randomize the last block of a phrase, or arm all four blocks for continuous evolution.
METER & POLY
Each layer runs its own sequencer rate, and the Master LFO runs a third, on its own division. Lock the layers together and they sit in the grid. Set them apart and they cycle against each other for bars on end.
Rates run from four bars to 1/128. Each layer runs four blocks in sequence, each holding one to eight steps. The rate sets the block's duration, so step count subdivides time instead of stretching it.
PER-STEP CONTROL
Velocity, Pitch, Length, Pan and a per-step LP/HP filter, each drawn independently across up to 32 steps, and each independently randomizable.
The filter becomes part of the rhythm rather than a static setting.
PERFORMANCE
The crossfade matrix sits on an infinity curve, with an independent volume orb per layer. Link it to the mod wheel to sweep from one layer to the other while you play.
One Master LFO drives the whole signal path, so you can ride a complete modulation scheme from a single depth control.

FOUR WAYS TO PLAY
One engine, four keyboard workflows
Envoy ships as four NKI patches. The patch sets how the two layers map to your keyboard; every Cadence Engine control stays the same.

ENVOY_OMNI
Both layers play together across one keyboard range. Each layer can load a LOW, MID, or HIGH source section, letting you stack and crossfade two source sections under the same keys.

ENVOY_ZONED
A kit-style layout. The keyboard is divided into multiple source zones: LOW is red, MID is blue, and HIGH is yellow. Each zone triggers a different source within the loaded kit.

ENVOY_SPLIT OMNI
The keyboard is split between the two layers, with one single-zone source section per side. Play each layer independently rather than stacking both layers under one trigger.

ENVOY_SPLIT ZONED
The keyboard is split between the two layers, and each half becomes its own multi-zone kit with independent sequencing. Both halves use the same LOW / MID / HIGH color coding as ZONED.
LOW, MID, and HIGH refer to source sections, not fixed frequency bands. Because sources can be transposed within a preset, their final tonal range can change considerably.

One of the things I kept coming back to was loop percussion.
Loops can be useful. I have used them. A lot of composers and producers use them. Sometimes you need something fast, or you need a rhythmic idea to get started.
But the problem is that a loop can lock you into someone else's rhythm. It repeats the same way. It can be hard to customize. And there is always the chance that someone else is using that exact same loop somewhere else.
With Envoy, I wanted to build something different.
Not a loop library. Not a collection of fixed rhythmic phrases.
I wanted to create something more spontaneous, more playable, and more alive. An instrument where the rhythm could keep changing, where the source material had movement inside it, and where the final result could become much more personal to the user.
The idea behind this engine goes back years.
I had sketched out the architecture and mocked up the interface in Photoshop long before Envoy became a working instrument. The core idea was there: two layers, rhythmic movement, variation, modulation, and a way to create patterns that did not feel locked or static.
But for a long time, it was still just an idea.
When I finally got the first working beta back, that was the moment where it started to feel real. I could actually play it. I could hear how the source material reacted to the engine. And I did not fully know what that was going to feel like until the engine, the interface, and the sounds all came together.
That was when Envoy really started to become Envoy.
The sound world of Envoy is analog, unstable, cinematic, dark, and textural.
There is a dystopian edge to it. There is an analog instability to it. But it can also be organic in the way it moves. Not organic like an acoustic instrument, but organic in the sense that the engine makes things feel more human, more spontaneous, and less fixed.
So while Envoy can work really well for darker cinematic percussion and sound design, I do not think it is limited to one style. It can also sit in ambient music, electronic production, experimental scoring, and more textural rhythmic writing.
It is very much a sound-exploration instrument.
Envoy is built from analog synth percussion. No acoustic samples. No digital sources.
The raw material came from hardware, modular movement, percussive synths, and analog sound design. I wanted the source material to feel raw, unstable, and alive, not like a normal drum library.
A lot of the sources started as longer, more textural percussive sounds. Not just short hits, but sounds with movement inside them: decays that shift, tails that change, noise, shimmer, filter movement, glitchy details, modulation, and instability after the initial attack.
Some of the behind-the-scenes footage is just phone documentation from the studio. It is not meant to look pristine. That is kind of the point.
That is what the process actually looked like: gear patched together, cables everywhere, sounds being shaped in real time, and the source material being built as it was recorded.
A lot of the variation was already happening while the sounds were being recorded.
There were patches where filter movement was changing from hit to hit. Some had folded tones, scooped-out resonances, random LFO movement, shimmer-like textures, glitch artifacts, and modulation running through Eurorack filter modules and other analog gear.
So the source material was not static.
The hardware was moving. The modulation was moving. The character of each hit could shift slightly as it was being captured.
That matters because Envoy uses ten round robins per source. For some instruments, round robins are just tiny differences. With Envoy, some of them are subtle, and some of them can feel more alive and textural because of the way the analog chain was moving during the recording process.
Before you touch the Flux Randomizer™, before you add modulation, before you add effects, there is already variation inside the source material itself.
A good amount of the sources started as longer textural hits, but the main idea was not always to play them long.
The idea was to use those longer sounds in a short, percussive way, and then let the Cadence Engine decide how much of the texture you hear, all under values you set.
With Length mode and the Step ENV, you can tighten a source into a short hit, or open the gate and let more of the texture come through. So a source might have this longer tail, or this moving internal texture, but the sequencer can pull out different amounts of it step by step.
That became a really important part of Envoy.
The texture is inside the sample, but the engine controls how much of it gets revealed.
So the same source can be tight and rhythmic in one moment, then more open and textural in another. It can be used inside a sequence, or it can be played from One-Shot View as a longer sound on its own.
That is one of the reasons I wanted the source material to have more going on than just a clean transient.
The way the sounds are organized matters.
Envoy is divided into LOW, MID, and HI sections. Each section starts with sounds that are more simple, direct, and immediate. Then, as you move deeper into the set, the sources become more complex, more abstract, and more unpredictable.
So in each section, from the earlier sounds toward the later sounds, you are moving from more straightforward material into the stranger side of the library.
That organization was intentional.
It means you can start with something simple and usable right away, then keep browsing deeper when you want something darker, more textural, more unstable, or more unusual.
That also connects to the different workflows in Envoy. Whether you are using OMNI, ZONED, SPLIT OMNI, or SPLIT ZONED, the source material is built around that same idea: direct to abstract, simple to complex, tight to textural.
The structure of the sound set supports the structure of the engine.
For me, that part is not only technical. A lot of it comes down to taste.
Does the sound feel like it belongs in this world? Does it resonate with the idea of Envoy? Does it have the right weight, movement, tone, or instability?
Some sounds might be interesting on their own but not right for the instrument. Some might be too similar to something else. Some might just not serve the bigger picture.
The ones that stayed were the ones that felt like they belonged.
That is a big part of building an instrument like this. It is not just recording sounds. It is deciding what the world of the instrument actually is.
There are two good ways to approach Envoy.
One is to load presets and listen to how the engine is being used.
I am not always a preset person myself, but for an instrument like this, presets are useful because they show the architecture. You can see how sources are layered, how the sequencer is moving, how Flux is being used, how Length shapes the feel, and how modulation and effects are part of the motion.
A preset can spark an idea, but it can also teach you how the engine works.
The other way is to start from scratch. Pick a source, shape a rhythm, turn on variation, and just explore.
Envoy was designed for both.
It should be intuitive enough that you can dive in and get something happening quickly, but deep enough that the more you use it, the more you discover.
Envoy is for people who want something different and are tired of working with looped percussion and traditional drum libraries with predictable preset categories and menus telling you how something should sound.
It is not about dropping in the same loop everyone else has. It is about creating rhythmic material that can keep changing, and that you can shape into something personal.
The recordings, the round robins, the source organization, the longer textures, the engine, Flux, modulation, and effects are all part of that same idea.
A rhythm does not have to stay frozen.
It can be built from real recorded analog movement, then reshaped inside the Cadence Engine into something that keeps evolving.
That is the heart of Envoy.
